Theme Song Sunday

I guess you can tell by now that I'm crazy about music.  I could never discuss it with any intelligence but if it moves my soul or grooves my butt I'm there.  If I could create a cosmic jukebox the sound I'd most want to hear would be the first call to a drum beat (log beat?).  It thrills me that aliens are going to be listening to Chuck Berry whenever they drop the needle onto the Voyager Golden Record.

Back here on Earth there's this guy who I adore and have adored since I was about twelve.  I'll wait till you're done laughing.  Done?  Okay.  Anyway, he's my deepest and most abiding crush in a sea of them and I met him over a decade ago.  My little brother and I charmed our way into a meet and greet after a show at which point I started to freak out a little.  And by a little I mean my brain melted.  When I finally got up to him I said, "I tripped in a ditch getting here.  Look, there's dirt on my shoe."  I called a friend of mine who at that moment worked for Capitol Records to gauge exactly how bad that was and he made a series of ego-deflating noises and comments:  "You didn't."  "Oh no."  He finally asked who it was and when I said Weird Al his tone completely changed.  "Don't worry about it," he laughed.  "He expects weirdos."  Uh, thanks?

So, my first theme song is the one that is STILL my theme song and probably always will be.

  1. I remember when they asked Nirvana if they were pissed off about Weird Al's riff of "Smell Like Teen Spirit, and they said (and I paraphrase) "Hell, no. That's a sign we have officially arrived."

I remember listening to Dr. Demento and loving Weird Al who has continued to get more clever and grow as an artist, which is rare for a comedian. They are usually a one trick pony, but he has evolved with the rapidly evolving popular music scene.

  2. I'm a total sucker for his polka medleys, too, especially "The Alternative Polka," which should come as no surprise. My favorite bit is "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," all "RAGE!ALIENATION!GAH!" on an accordian. Hilarious.

  3. I was just watching the "White and Nerdy" video, and I realized I *have* all the X-Men comics he was holding up at one point. And they are all 1990's issues, so they probably did come from someone's collection...

  4. I love that video! The PacMan in the background is hilarious and whoever thought "Donny Osmond" was a genius!
