I have a really hard time tweaking people who already don't take themselves too seriously. The trouble is that I can't quite figure this movement out. I'm sure that some of them do and I'm equally sure that some of them don't. Maybe you all can help me sort through it.
The movement I'm talking about is the Real Life Superheroes. Really, click the link there, I'll wait. Stunning, isn't it? I get Cosplay but this is performance art + pepperspray. When they're doing things like handing out supplies to the homeless or cleaning Times Square that's very cool. It's when they actually try to intervene that things get a little less cool.
I admit I'm of two (or more) minds about this kind of stuff. In the late 70s it was The Guardian Angels patrolling and that red beret is still recognizable but they aren't strangers to controversy, either. If a couple of people in red berets come to your aid you're probably in good hands; if it's someone in tights and a cape the crusader might wind up peppersprayed. I'm all for being as goofy as you possibly can be at all times but it can be really hard to transition from goofy to authoritative in a split second. I don't know. I still have to think about it. Your thoughts are welcome.

Yeah, that's a bit scary. The Guardian Angels got into a lot of trouble. Some members were killed. I hope these mini-me caped crusaders realize apprehending criminals isn't a Hollywood movie. This is like a train wreck waiting to happen.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time I think they confine themselves to helping the homeless and lost tourists. I'm not sure if Phoenix Jones got too big for his padded britches or what but these people need to keep in mind that they're citizens like you and me unless they've been deputized.

I can understand wanting to help people and all, but come on. They are only gonna get themselves dead. At least that Phoenix guy had enough foresight to get bulletproofs.....
