Off Road: Halle-freaking-lujah!
A new study of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy was reported yesterday by the Epilepsy Foundation. The cluster of symptoms I had as a kid point to JME, just one of many epilepsy syndromes. In a nutshell, the report stated that up to 68% of people with JME eventually become seizure free and of those about 30% (myself included) no longer need drug treatment. This is great news for a couple of reasons but most important to me is proof that when real research asks real questions eventually you get real answers instead of real human beings languishing in institutions or being sterilized or subjected to all manner of real bullshit.

DeleteYou have to ask what we really achieve by medicating all of our kids to the norm all the time -- besides higher drug bills. (Obviously I'm not opposed to medical treatment for those who really need it.)
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely a situation that's ripe for abuse. I remember reading a news story about a kid whose teacher "diagnosed" him as having ADHD and the school district was trying to force his parents to medicate him even though his pediatrician said there was no medical basis for it. I'll have to look for it for you.
