Road Trip! The Empire State, Part 1: Yasgur's Farm

Before we get into The City we have a stop to make at a little farm upstate.  Like we could have passed this place by.  Where are we?  Woodstock, of course.  Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young covered Joni Mitchell's theme song for the event and aren't those harmonies killer?

Look at all those happy hippies.  Let's look at some more but to keep this post from becoming a monster we're only going to look at three performances from Woodstocks 1969 and 1994 which is still going to clock us in at seven including the vid above.  First, as he should be, is Ritchie Havens who opened the joint up with this amazing version of "Freedom/Motherless Child."

Janis Joplin and the Kozmik Blues Band took the stage about 2AM on Sunday and she did this.  I think I might be capable of a coherent thought at that hour.

And rounding it all out was Jimi Hendrix who took the stage Monday at 9AM.

At Woodstock 1994 the vibe was, well, a little different but the mud was the same.  Nine Inch Nails mud wrestled before taking the stage.  Have I mentioned how hot I think Trent Reznor is?  Especially mud spattered Trent Reznor?  "Head Like A Hole" was their first huge song and there's a story there but that'll have to wait for another time.

Green Day actually started a mud fight with the audience, though not during "Basket Case."

Another thing the Woodstocks had in common (aside from mud) was Carlos Santana.  This one is long but any combination of "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va" (with "Gypsy Queen" thrown in for good measure) is okay by me.

This state is going to take about a week, I think.  I thought Boston and Rhode Island were going to kill me...yeah, no.  Oh and just wait till we hit Chicago.  Hmm, might want to make that a triple espresso.  Anyway, have a great day and we'll hit the road again Friday.

    1. Isn't there a museum there now? We've been talking about going back to Maine and looking at places to stop along the way.

  5. I went to a 20th anniversary celebration near Long Beach, Ca. It was pretty awesome as some of the groups at the original showed up.
