Off Road: Hooliganism (noun): Thinking (Russian Government)

Pussy Riot was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail for standing on the altar at a Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow and asking the Virgin Mary to protect the country from Vladimir Putin.  Wanna mix religion and politics?  Make sure you're on the right side at all times because if you're not this is the shit that can happen.

  1. Two years for hooliganism? Crazy! While I can see that the venue these girls chose in which to perform their act was in poor taste, they certainly do not deserve such vengeful retribution.
Punk Rock totally belongs in this type of a political system. Unfortunately, this type of system is best at keeping its message down.

    1. Yeah but poor taste isn't illegal. And considering the repression the church went through under communisim this is all pretty rich, you know?

    2. The Russian Orthodox Church is perceived to be "in bed" with Putin, as it were, so the choice of venue was quite deliberate. When considering the choice of venue in context I think it was entirely appropriate.

  2. That people don't see that *this* is where we're going when we ask that laws enforce "morals" or "common decency" always mystifies me. Laws that don't protect our right to be different -- precisely the kind of difference that bothers us -- don't protect any of us.

    1. Their right is more right than anyone else's right. Or all pigs are equal but some are more equal than others.

  3. L7! The band that corrupted me :)

Some feminist friends and I donated a pile of money to the Pussy Riot defense fund a few months back. It's a disappointing outcome. Heartwarming to see the tradition of Russian dissident artists continuing though.

  4. I have hope that the government will be shamed into freeing these girls. But I doubt they will be safe in their own country after this.
