Call Me Moron

Poor Carly Rae Jepsen.  Okay, not financially, being that "Call Me Maybe" was the best-selling earworm of summer 2012.  Poor as in the kid's about to get a lesson in coattail riding.  A copyright infringement lawsuit was filed against her on Thursday November 8th in the U.S. Disctrict Court in Los Angeles by a Ukranian singer named AZA who claims that "Call Me Maybe" is a ripoff of her song "Hunky Santa."  You know I can't resist when stuff like this happens so I'm putting on my friendly Moron In A Hurry cap and let's go.

According to wikipedia Jepsen wrote "Call Me Maybe" as a folk song (I know, right?) with her writing partner Tavish Crowe but producer Josh Ramsay "helped us kind of pop-ify it."  It was originally released in September 2011 and did well in Jepsen's native Canada but didn't really catch on internationally until Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez tweeted about it in January 2012.  This is all well documented.  What is less well documented is the recording and release history of "Hunky Santa" but the video was uploaded to YouTube in December 2011, a full three months after "Call Me Maybe" was released.  Hmmmm.  Math may make me cry but even I can solve that one.  I'm dying to read the text of the suit which will hopefully be uploaded on TheSmokingGun anytime now.

I'm not going to post the vid for either song because if I post one I'd have to post the other to be fair and I'm not willing to subject you all to the fifty shades of hot mess that is "Hunky Santa."  Trust me on this one.  On the off chance that you went looking and seared your retinas, I have something for that.  Kseniya Simonova's sand animation from Ukraine's Got Talent in 2009 is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen.  Take two and call me in the morning maybe.

  1. Wow. Sorry Ms. Jepsen has to defend against a frivolous lawsuit, but glad it's nothing. "Call Me Maybe" was a major cheerer-upper for me this summer, and I loved the parodies as well.

  2. Yes, loved Cookie Monster in particular.

It was a particular joy to listen to this song during the whole Chik-Fil-A fiasco and know that the world is changing, bit by bit.
