Okay, so we do fan letters in this fandom and mostly they're fake.  This one isn't.

Dear Martin Freeman,

Caught you on David Letterman the other night and I'd like to apologize for him.  I'm not sure what the problem was but it wasn't you.  You were perfectly charming and trying to engage and you kept running headfirst into Wall o' Grumpy Dave.  He does that sometimes, more frequently in recent years, and seems to just want to get to the band.

Let's talk about bands for a minute.  Letterman loves them and some big names have had their national debuts on his show over the years.  REM, X, I think Oingo Boingo (if my memory is correct)...bands that were a little much for Dick Clark.  Joan Jett and Foo Fighters rocked my very favorite performance of "Bad Reputation" on his stage.  While I'm sure they all appreciate the exposure not everyone buys Letterman himself.  A couple of weeks ago he gushed over Soundgarden's return and when he turned back to the camera bass player Ben Shepherd -- a man with a really low tolerance for ass kissing -- stood behind him and made the American Sign Language gesture for "bullshit."  That's right, called him out on his own show.  Not quite as stunning as the time Cher said she wouldn't come on after years of invitations because she thought he was a fucking asshole but close.  In regards to his time with you, I have to go with her assessment.

Again, you were great.  He sucked.  Sorry he was a fly in the ointment.  Maybe some Aretha will make it better?

Love,

  1. Yikes! I'm glad RA didn't go instead. Dave is getting grumpier and grumpier later.

    1. I've been wondering if he isn't sick again, actually. His thing with Freeman was especially pronounced because in the first segment he was all over Matt Damon.

    2. Ah! Thanks for the review. Though I didn't see MF on Letterman, I concur with Judiang--Ixnay to Grumpy Dave for RA. Ha!

    3. Ixnay to Grumpy Dave period. It's hard for me to believe some days that he's the same broadcaster who managed to get through Crispin Glover taking a kick at his head.

  2. Loved Letterman for many years but haven't been able to watch him since the blackmail incident. Not because of what he did (although that sours my mouth, too, given my experiences) as much as because he tried to turn it into a huge joke.

    1. I was actually kind of hoping that Freeman would channel Brother Theodore for a minute just to freak Letterman out but you know...
