Okay, So I Lied

I said my last post was going to be the only one about Hobbit hoopla and, well, Something happened. Warner Bros. has released the list of talent they want the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider for Oscar nominations and boyfriend is on there, in the Best Supporting Actor category with Ian McKellan and Orlando Bloom. Dude. Whatever I think of awards shows THAT is a huge deal.

I'm as much of two minds about these things as I am about anything else. I have never known anyone who's won an Oscar but an old and dear friend won an Emmy for camera work on a news show and he used his as a doorstop till he started dating his husband who kept moving it. At the Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana, PA you can see a photo of the Oscar he won for The Philadelphia Story proudly displayed in the front window of his father's hardware store like a Little League trophy. That's keeping it in perspective.

There's a long list of people who I think deserved to win who didn't including Angela Bassett for What's Love Got to Do With It, Val Kilmer for Tombstone, and Ralph Fiennes for everything he's ever done except Maid In Manhattan. Don't even get me started on Spike Lee. Boyfriend may not wind up being nominated by the Academy at all but his name is out there. The people he worked for on this project think highly enough of his performance to place him with huge names, actors with big reputations. Hopefully they're finally getting what Armitageworld has been saying for about ten years, that this guy is going places. Maybe that'll be onstage accepting an award in March and maybe it won't but ultimately I don't know that it matters. The ride so far has been amazing and I think we just took a turn we weren't expecting. He's still the one at the wheel and even if he doesn't tell us where we're headed it's okay. The journey's the thing, right?

Anyway, have a great weekend and I really am shutting up now. I just wanted to take a minute to mark this. I almost never speculate what's going on in his head but this time I'm willing to imagine he feels like everyone else who says, "It's an honor to be nominated." It is. Congratulations, boyfriend.

  1. They put his name up for consideration in the same category last year ... I read it as a sort of "we're getting behind this name" move -- if people see it, and his face, enough, eventually the lightbulb will click. I can't wait to see the movie because the places where Thorin goes emotionally in this part of the story are some of the things Armitage does best -- but I agree. Must be very gratifying to know the studio is behind you.

  4. So basically, this is something to be happy about, but not to get our hopes up high about any kind of nomination? We can dream. Thanks for the heads up,Jazz

  5. I just checked WB FYC site and they put all the principles in. But still, stranger things have happened.

    1. I'm not saying don't get your hopes up but keep it in perspective. McKellen has been nominated twice, for his portrayal of director James Whale in "Gods and Monsters" (which is brilliant and if you haven't seen it please do) and also for his work as Gandalf. If he's nominated I'd put money on him to win.

  6. The Academy has done that in the past- when an actor has lost for great performances, they nominate him/her for something good but not great - especially older actors -and they often win. Gods and Monsters was an incredible performance. I didn't notice on the website - I have to look and see whether WB put the song up.
