Those Who Can Spam

Ha! I'm celebrating yet more computer access today by spamming you with my totally bullshit speculative Thorin Oakenshield play list. Armitage said he had one and kind of hinted at what might have been on it but you know me, why stop there?

What he's actually talked about has included a bunch of stuff I don't listen to (Radiohead is heartbroken, I'm sure) and my classical music education is sorely lacking so what you'll find below is stuff that I think rocks. He did say Black Sabbath so let's start there. Either of these would do, I think, and "Paranoid" is first.

Or possibly "War Pigs."

Too heavy? Not gonna get any lighter, I hate to tell you. I've never really been much of a Smashing Pumpkins fan but I love "Bullet With Butterfly Wings."

Did you know Billy Corrigan once dated Courtney Love? That has nothing to do with anything, really, other than a totally ham handed segue into "Violet" by Hole.

Someone who did not date Courtney Love is Chris Cornell. During Soundgarden's decade plus hiatus he was in this other little combo called Audioslave and they did this.

I don't think The Supreme Guitar Deity was in that vid anywhere but if he was it was a blink and you'll miss him moment. This is the one song I'd be willing to lay odds was on Armitage's list. If it wasn't I'm going to be seriously disappointed in him as a fellow rock fan because, come on, epic Dylan lyrics over Hendrix's sonic boom? How can you resist it?

So, what do you think might have been on The List? Comments are open.

  1. *removes headphones cranked to 11* Oh, sorry, was rockin' down Memory Lane with Mr. Hendrix. ;) Good choices! Will think a bit on mine.

    3. *Sigh* The Doors.

Good choices though my brain scrambled Grand Funk Railroad and Manfred Mann so I started humming "Quinn the Eskimo" instead. Thorin has some serious peltage but I don't think he'd survive an Arctic winter. It amused me for half a second, anyway, but that doesn't take much.

  2. As a music nut I love this idea. I had not really thought about a specific Thorin playlist (I have a RA playlist, though - compiled of his own song choices and some of my own), but what is missing here is Led Zep. They have Tolkien references in several songs, "Misty Mountain Hop" the most obvious one. For TH I would suggest "Over the Hills and Far Away" - Hobbit references in there...

    1. I'm not really a Led Zep person (I know, I know). What I was going for here was aggressive (Sabbath), desperate (Smashing Pumpkins and Hole) and grit (Cornell has talked about how everyone in that vid walked with integrity). Plus Hendrix. :)

    2. Dude, don't be sorry. You see it how you see it and I didn't mean to make you feel wrong. There's room for all views here. Like zan is a hippie and I'm a grunge baby. There's not a thing wrong with your recommendation. :)

    3. Hehe, sorry again, no - I was sorry I had misread your initial post, Jazzy, because it was all quite clearly hard rock (and not prog rock wank *ooops*). Anyhow. I think your post has inspired me enough to make this one of my Flash FanstRA topics. And then you can shoot back and mess up my indie crap with some hearty rock ;-)

    2. :) Oh, I'm glad you like it, Jazzy!
This is Swedish heavy metal group, called Sabaton.

  4. Jimi Hendrix. Sigh. I first heard him circa age 15 and instantly understood the expression "lock up your daughters." I bought "Are You Experienced" (No, but I would like to be) and never felt un-sexy again. Ah, the power of music.

    1. Have you ever read "I'm With the Band: Confessions of A Groupie" by Pamela DesBarres? She talks about filming the promo clip for "Foxy Lady" and how Hendrix intimidated her. It's a totally fascinating read, I highly recommend it. Thanks for commenting!
