It's moving day here at the Dandelion Patch. I've loved being here but it's time to go for a bunch of reasons. You can find new posts on WordPress but the archive will still be here. Thanks to all of you who've read me here, I certainly hope you'll join me there. One last spin before I close the door?
This might actually be what I'm trying to say, though apparently I can only speak in Soundgarden at the moment.

Artis the Spoonman is a real guy and a respected musician. He played with Zappa which is good enough for me. He is odd, he is strange, he is beautiful, and he does his thing with total joy. There's no shame in that. There's no shame in being different, in approaching life in a way most people don't, however that is for you. Don't let anyone else tell you that you feel too much, or think too much, or write too much, or dream too much, or laugh too much, or cry too much, or want too much, or whatever it is that bugs them about you. Here's the thing: whatever bugs them about you also bugs them about themselves. Either they're ashamed of feeling, or thinking, or writing, or dreaming too much, or about the wrong things. You're going to places they wish they could but for whatever reason won't. That's not your problem, it's theirs. Don't let their inhibitions clip your wings.

In the meantime, have some Soundgarden. Freaking loud. Dance your heart out, grab some spoons, feel the weird. I'll be right there with you.
If I work it out you'll see it, if I don't you won't. In the meantime, though, have this. Legend has it that during the filming of Singles Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam made up a list of song titles for fictitious band Citizen Dick's demo and among them were "Spoonman" and "Seasons." Chris Cornell took it as a challenge to write songs for each title and while "Spoonman" won a Grammy for Soundgarden a couple of years later, "Seasons" wound up on the soundtrack. Have a great day, whatever you're doing, and I'll be back later. Maybe.
As it happens, this summer has been big for "Thunderstruck" covers and I haven't done a mashup on a Monday in a looooong time so let's get to it.

A couple of weeks ago this vid was all over the place. A Finnish bluegrass band called Steve 'N' Seagulls have been releasing heavy metal and hard rock covers all summer (including "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden and "Holy Diver" by Dio) but this is the one that went viral for them.

When I went looking for this on YouTube this morning I couldn't remember their name (it is a Monday, after all) so I searched for "Thunderstruck bluegrass," because how many versions could there possibly be? As it turns out, there were three that came up immediately including this one by The Cleverlys, who've also covered Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga (I'm preparing myself before I listen to their take on "Gangnam Style").

While I like both of those covers, I really really like the fiddle in the second one (we've talked about my thing about fiddle players, right?). So now that we're on string instruments you know what's coming, right? There's no way I can not play the 2Cellos version, shredding it really old school.

Awake now? A couple of cups of coffee and some screaming cello later and I definitely am. Have a great Monday!jazzbaby1http://www.blogger.com/profile/06089789586446431602noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4609231425750918115.post-22187007839555699292014-08-15T14:37:00.000-04:002014-08-15T14:39:08.649-04:00 Friday Kilty GoofinessI'm certain that I won't be alone in appreciating the sight of Darth Vader in a kilt playing flaming bagpipes on a unicycle. If you needed a laugh today, and I really did, thank Kathie who sent me this after my last post. :)
Okay, full disclosure: I never finished reading Outlander. Someone asked me on Facebook whether it was appropriate for teens and, honestly, I don't know. I'm easily distracted and at the time I was also reading two other things and got so caught up in them that when it was time to return it to the library I had only gotten to about chapter four, I think. It's been out every time I've been back since then so I'll get to it but it might take a while. If you've read it, what did you think of it?

Of course if we're talking about Outlander we're talking about guys in kilts doing really fierce things and while that, regrettably, has NOT included flaming bagpipes as yet I'm certain that's just an oversight. Have a great Friday!
I mean, how cool is that? While there has been some grumbling about silly fangirls it's mostly been drowned out by the sound of rave reviews and standing ovations.

Tickets went on sale Tuesday for the 2015 production of Hamlet at the Barbican Theatre starring Benedict Cumberbatch and 100,000 tickets went in ten minutes. You know who does that? Rock stars do that. Music festivals do that. And now, apparently, Cumberbatch does that. And the grumbling about his fandom's behavior for an event that's STILL A YEAR AWAY has already started.

Josh Dickey from Mashable took aim at them last night in an oh-so-Shakespearean fashion. Hi, Josh? Wishing that Cumberbatch's fanbase would suicide en masse so that "normal people" might get to see him doesn't make you a sharp cultural critic, it makes you a mean spirited jackass. It doesn't matter if you thought you were being facetious, frankly, and given the three separate articles with your byline about the death of Robin Williams it was breathtakingly tone deaf. And "normal people" like what, Josh? People who don't write fan fiction, maybe? You might want to discuss that with Mark Gatiss. People who aren't female, maybe? Because, wow, that's a new one. People who realized that these tickets are a hot property and scored before you did? I'd be willing to hazard a guess that that's a little closer to the truth. Oh, wait, did I just make an assumption about you based on something I read online without knowing anything else about you? Huh. Who would do something like that?

To any of you who managed to get tickets, congratulations and have a great time. I may not be part of your clan but I get your excitement and I'm thrilled for all of you. I have no doubt that he's going to be as fantastic as he always is. Total ninja, that one. I think some Cumberbatch might be in order here, don't you? Have a great day!

The annual, spectacular party that is Burning Man will be happening at the end of this month in Black Rock City, NV and the annual, wet blanket smack talk about Burners will be happening more or less simultaneously. "Hippies and slackers," critics sniff at the nerve of anyone who might prioritize cutting loose in the desert over, uh, sniffing critically at the nerve of anyone cutting loose in the desert. There's more to Burners than that, sniffy critics.

While it's definitely a party it's also an experiment in community building. Burning Man founder Larry Harvey wrote out the Ten Principles in 2004, "crafted not as a dictate of how people should be and act, but as a reflection of the community's ethos and culture as it had organically developed since the event's inception." These principles include things like gifting (the basis of BRC's economy), communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace behind (unless you can make the place better), participation and immediacy and embracing them isn't limited to the playa.

In 2005, moved by the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, a team of Burners headed directly from Black Rock City to Biloxi and Pearlington, Mississippi, to do whatever they could to help those affected in the region. According to Burners Without Borders, "Over the course of eight months, BWB volunteers gifted over $1M worth of reconstruction and debris removal to the residents of Mississippi." Since then Burners have gifted demolition and clean-up to Union Beach, NJ after Hurricane Sandy; coordinated a communication and resources hub in Tacloban, Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan; and are currently providing demolition and clean up assistance to flood victims in Milliken, CO.

They also support civic initiatives both in the US and internationally through grants and volunteer coordination. I particularly love the winner of the Walk The Talk Grant from this year but all of their projects are important and aimed at creating lasting change. Not bad for a bunch of slacking hippies and proof that if you have a group of friends and a desire to change your world you can move mountains, even if you have to use your own hands. jazzbaby1http://www.blogger.com/profile/06089789586446431602noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4609231425750918115.post-89387500503294020972014-08-11T19:23:00.000-04:002014-08-11T19:24:27.172-04:00Good Night, Mrs. DoubtfireRest well. No, he's probably not going to get one soon and I have another suggestion for him because I'm helpful like that. A couple of weeks ago Obscura posted about a rather loopy conversation we had where we dreamcast Anne Rice's The Mummy with Richard Armitage leading the way as Ramses the Damned (and threw in Ralph Fiennes and Tom Hiddleston for good measure because, again, we're helpful). While the conversation itself was pretty goofy the idea of Armitage in a movie based on something Rice has written isn't outside the realm of possibility if Rice herself has anything to say about it. On her Facebook page in December 2010 she announced, "RICHARD ARMITAGE IS MY LESTAT," AND YES...uh, sorry...and yes, it was an all caps moment. Very cool, right? But like most dreamcasting how close to happening was it really?

It just got a whole lot closer. According to Deadline.com, "Universal Pictures, Imagine Entertainment and Brian Grazer have acquired rights to The Vampire Chronicles..."

!!!!!!!!! And ajksf&*sdhf!!!!!!!!!eleventy!!!!!!!!

Soooooo, will Rice make good on her dreamcast (which also includes Matt Bomer and Matthew MacFadyen)? Will you go? My butt is already in the seat no matter who plays Lestat, frankly, but Armitage would definitely be gravy there.

A couple of weeks ago Obscura and I told you about our fourth SpReAd The Love challenge in honor of Richard Armitage's just-opened movie Into The Storm. This time we're asking you to tell us about a disaster relief agency that's touched your life -- one that you've donated to or worked for or that offered your community help in a time of need. If you have a blog of your own, please post about it or, if you don't, let one of us know and we'll host it for you. Each post counts as a kindness for this challenge, which runs from today August 7 till August 22, in addition to all of the kindnesses we've collected since the Bouquets of Goodwill speed round in July. We have another Anonymous Co-Conspirator who will donate $1 for each kindness to a charity supported by Richard Armitage via Just Giving and a matching donation to an international disaster relief agency as voted by you. At the close of the poll last night there was a tie between Doctors Without Borders and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and that means that the $200 max will be split three ways. Thanks to all of the donors we've had in the last eight months, those who've offered monetary donations to Richard Armitage's charities and those whose kindnesses we've logged along the way. The first post in this challenge is up at Me+Richard where Servetus talks about a disaster in her community one year ago today.jazzbaby1http://www.blogger.com/profile/06089789586446431602noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4609231425750918115.post-69358321253543529392014-08-05T23:22:00.001-04:002014-08-05T23:25:30.280-04:00A Slightly Quieter PremiereAs much as I have loved reading all the Tweets and looking at all the pictures and watching all the videos from the last 24 hours, I'm taking a break from Richard Armitage fangirling for a second to talk about someone else I fangirl really hard: poet Anis Mojgani.

I spin a lot of music here but the artist whose work I've posted most frequently is Mojgani. His gorgeous words hit me right where I live every single time I hear them and yesterday he posted a new piece at The Piano Farm on Tumblr. I watched it twice, Tweeted it, reblogged it, watched it again, and then poked a friend to go watch it. I'm still wrecked. Go check it out and thank you, @mojgani, for the blessing. jazzbaby1http://www.blogger.com/profile/06089789586446431602noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4609231425750918115.post-12791825461109448142014-08-05T14:59:00.000-04:002014-08-05T15:01:07.639-04:00Richard Armitage Isn't Busy EnoughYou know I'm kidding when I say that, right? While I wouldn't blame boyfriend if he took a reeeally long vacation after the last of The Hobbit press tour and premiere cycle coming up this winter something came up in my Facebook feed today that made me think of him and wish upon a star...

Jennifer Lee, the director of Frozen, is adapting Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time for Disney according to Variety. If you're saying to yourself right now, "Self, didn't Disney already do A Wrinkle in Time?" the answer is yes and you can find out about the live-action 2003 version here.

So, another live action or an animated movie? If I had a vote I'd say animated because that means voice work and we can't seem to get enough of Armitage's voice. What do you all think? Frozen, of course, is a total monster hit and has inspired some hilarious fanmade videos, including this one. Okay, I think it's funny. You all have a good day.
If you're not on Twitter but would still like to join the party, Judiang has generously opened Armitage World Chat to anyone who wants to join in. The chat button is on the right side of the screen at Confessions of A Watcher and festivities should kick off around 7ishEST. If you're in a different time zone, just join us when you can, there's guaranteed to be lots of squee and goofiness to be had.

To anyone who's going to the premiere tonight, have a fabulous time and give the Dude all our love! Do we need a playlist for this one? I think we might. I'll work on it but in the meantime have some Cameo and I'll see you tonight!
A fan named Jody Duff has been raising funds through JustGiving for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the band donated $17,000, which you can read about here at Billboard. Well done, guys.jazzbaby1http://www.blogger.com/profile/06089789586446431602noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4609231425750918115.post-9506058765905129632014-07-29T13:19:00.001-04:002014-07-29T13:24:41.500-04:00You Can Be A Coffee Achiever, Or: One of My First Crushes FINALLY Tops The ChartsOne of the defining moments in my personal fandom history happened when I was in the eighth grade. Every night a friend recorded a local radio show, The Top Nine At Nine (as voted by listeners between 7PM and 8PM), on a Maxell cassette and every morning we played it back on her contraband tape recorder on the bus to junior high. A group of us would chat and sing along but one morning there was a new song that rendered us all completely silent as we tried to catch the lyrics, and, wait, was that a slide whistle? And an accordion? In the middle of early-80s synth pop heaven? We listened in total confusion and debated whether that was the same guy who sang "Pac Man Fever". Whoever it was, it was a cute (the slide whistle) if gross (the lyrics) song and we decided that "Weird Al" Yankovic was a one hit wonder. You have NO IDEA how happy I am to have been wrong about that.

When he finally hit Number One on the Billboard Album Chart last week after thirty plus years, Tom Green got to tell him about it and this was his reaction. Really, how can you not love that?

And if THAT isn't enough, over the weekend SHOUT! Factory announced at ComicCon that UHF is being re-released on a 25th Anniversary Blu-ray coming this fall.

I mentioned a couple of days ago that a spam might be in order so let's get on that. His 1984 album, "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3-D, was produced by Rick Derringer and contained his hysterical and Grammy winning send-up of Michael Jackson, "Eat It."

I blogged about meeting him waaaaay back here in a post about why "Dare to Be Stupid" from his 1985 album Dare to Be Stupid is my personal theme song. It still is.

Madonna is said to have suggested the title for this one, also from Dare to Be Stupid.

Each of Yankovic's albums has included a polka medley and one of my favorites is the one from 1986's Polka Party! "Rock Me Amadeus" was begging to be a polka, right?

There's no way I'm not including "Smells Like Nirvana." This one was on Off the Deep End from 1992. You knew it would be here.

As much as I love that one, though, my all time favorite is "White & Nerdy" from 2006's Straight Outta Lynwood. I have said before and I still think that whoever first said, "You know what this video needs? A Donny Osmond cameo," is a brilliant genius. I mean, really.

I apologize for the vid heaviness of this post but this? It's been a long time coming and I wanted to take some time to really celebrate it. Thanks, Weird Al, for daring to be stupid.

Or Peter Jackson. Or, better yet, Peter Jackson dressed as an Evil Jester, here.jazzbaby1http://www.blogger.com/profile/06089789586446431602noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4609231425750918115.post-21661393243374251342014-07-25T08:30:00.000-04:002014-07-25T08:32:49.641-04:00How I Spent My Summer Vacation*Stumbles in, blows dust off the joint*

Hey, y'all...uh, yinz'all...uh, look, I just spent a couple of weeks south of the Mason-Dixon Line, it's gonna take me a minute here. We spent a day with one of my sisters and her grandson here.

We stayed a week or so in South Carolina where we spent an evening listening to these guys

and a few days later met some old friends and had a lot of this.

My oldest turned twelve a few days ago while doing this.

And this.

And this.

Her younger siblings weren't as daring but they still had a great time. We're glad to be home, though, and as soon as I get through approximately 6,843 loads of laundry I'll tell you more about it. In the meantime, it seems that my beloved Weird Al has FINALLY hit number one on Billboard after thirty-some years so we're going out with my favorite single from his new album. Have a great day!
